The SimplyTajweed Course Class 2; Heavy and Light Letters:

In brief, tajweed is the correct and specific pronunciation of the letters of the Arabic Alphabet, and the rules as to how to recite.

Regardless of your age, recitation ability and first language, SimplyTajweed is your platform to start or continue your tajweed journey. This course has been meticulously designed in a way that is suitable for those of any level of tajweed and recitation ability. It does rely on you having a very basic understanding of the Arabic language and so just being aware of the alphabet and how to join a few letters together. If you’ve never come across Arabic before however, don’t worry at all. This course is suitable for you too, but it would be wise to supplement it with a very basic beginner Arabic course.

My vision is to deliver this course in a very personalised, digestible and engaging manner, and to once and for all break the misconception of complexity which deters many off trying to learn tajweed.

In this 2nd of initially 5 comprehensive classes, we cover:

  1. An overview of the 2 categories of letter characteristics; paired and unpaired sifaas.
  2. Definitions of heaviness and lightness, how to apply to a letter and which letters they’re applicable to.
  3. The heaviness hierarchy,
  4. The letters that are occasionally heavy and occasionally light and a thorough interactive insight into the rules for each of these letters.

Mastering this class is a 2 step process. Step 1 is being aware of and fully understanding the theory and Step 2 is putting that theory into practice! By the end of this class you will have hopefully fully completed Step 1, and the class project will allow you to put Step 2 into action instantly!

Remember to be confident that now that you have covered and understood the theory regarding the characteristic of heaviness and lightness, through practice you will hopefully master this topic area and be able to fully exhibit this characteristic when pronouncing the letters! 

For further details regarding this class project, watch Lesson 17. There are 2 sections to the project. The first section focuses on being able to identify which letters are heavy/light as well as grading the level of heaviness as per the heaviness hierarchy. The second section focuses more so on the 3 mushtarak letters (heavy in certain situations and light in other situations) and the rules concerning when each of these letters are to be made heavy/light.

Once you have attempted the project, self-assess by referring back to the lessons if needs be. This is a really useful form of practice and learning. And to go a step further, feel free to share your responses in the class project gallery etc!
