Requirements

• The learner in this course is expected to have studied English for 5-6 years, linguistically he has been exposed to 250 structures and has a vocabulary of about 2500 words, the main part of which is passive. At +2 level, the learner needs the ability to write simple passages of general utility in English in paragraph writing, letter writing, note- making, summarising. etc. At this level, the learner has to face a new medium of teaching and a new medium of instruction. The emphasis now is on writing skills. Writing plays an extremely important role in the classroom. The learner has to take down notes from the teacher’s lecture and the blackboard, and resort to writing of a mechanical kind. Writing from listening involves a skill of higher order. The writing skill has not been developed at school. The +2 stage is very crucial in the career of the learner. After this stage he has to join graduation classes or some professional course where he has to depend much more heavily on the skill of writing. The learner is expected to produce grammatically correct and coherent sentences. He needs to be able to think coherently. For this he has to be taught possibly with visual aids, graded guided composition. He has to be cautioned against mother tongue interference particularly against translating from mother tongue.

This course is for

• This course can act as a bridge course for learner’s who lack behind in the skill of writing. The learner is about to enter university, or he has to appear for an interview for some job. He could be the learner of English language as a second language. (ESL) He has probably gone to a regional medium school and has been exposed to 5-6 years of English Language. Many courses and thirty theses of American and Canadian Universities in the area of writing were studied to see if any of them had any material that could be used for developing writing skills in the learner. Much consideration has not been given to writing skills. Whatever stress is laid on writing, is on writing taken in conjunction with reading and where the skill of writing is taken up, only the format is taught, which is not tantamount to dealing with writing in the real sense. Originality and involvement of mental processes go almost completely by default. None of them was useful for the purpose. So, this course was developed for the learner at +2 level, to improve his writing skills.
