7.0 / 10
This course was last updated on 5/2019.

Course content can become outdated quite quickly. After analysing 71,530 courses, we found that the highest rated courses are updated every year. If a course has not been updated for more than 2 years, you should carefully evaluate the course before enrolling.

Student Feedback

We analyzed factors such as the rating and the ratio between the number of reviews and the number of students, which is a great signal of student commitment. If a course does not yet have a rating, we exclude Feedback Score from the overall CourseMarks Score.

New courses are hard to evaluate because there are no or just a few student ratings, but Student Feedback Score helps you find great courses even with fewer reviews.

Description

This course is a typical overview startup founders need to know about raising the seed funds critical to getting their Startup company off the ground.

Startup companies need to purchase equipment, rent offices, and hire staff. More importantly, they need to grow. In almost every case they will require outside capital to do these things.

The initial capital raised by a company is typically called “seed” capital. Subsequent investment raised are known as ‘Series Rounds’. This will be unpacked in the course.

This is not intended to be a complete guide to fundraising. It includes a foundation knowledge of what most founders will need to know prior to going after investment.

The information comes from my experiences at startup school at Y combinator, working at startups, advising startups and trying to launch my own startup

You will learn

Your class assignment is to start readying yourself for investment as seen in lesson #10

These include:

Create a sound business plan

This will consist of:

Estimated capital you’ll need to get to the next funding round

A thought-out plan of how the capital you’re asking for will help grow the business, incl. realistic financial forecasts

Key metrics you’ll be focussing on and how they relate to your business plan

Current status of the company, incl. profit and loss statement, cash flow statement and balance sheet

Demonstrate market traction

Market traction proves to investors there’s market demand for your solution. Relevant indicators depend on your product/service and business model, but these are the common ones:

Sales revenue and evidence of its growth

Number of users, incl. engagement and retention

Number of clients or partnerships, especially if they’re high-profile

Form a suitable team

The people in your team need to be not only qualified, but also suitable for the stage your business is at and the challenges it’s facing.

Who is your executive team?

Find the suitable investor

Be strategic about who you intend to pitch to. Investors usually specialise in specific industries and business stages, so take the time to find the ones likely to take notice of your business.

Looking forward to seeing of your investment readiness briefs soon:)
