Description

Zanfirico Cane is characterized by twisted ribbons of color which are suspended in clear glass to form an intricately designed cane.  The class is intended for the beginning student and does not require a lot of experience or expensive tools and materials.  The class will start with an introduction and a presentation slide of the class Syllabus.  We will then review the prerequisites including having knowledge of basic lampwork safety requirements, a well ventilated work area and a pair of didymium safety glasses.  It is also recommended that the students has a kiln to properly anneal their canes and beads.
The Simple 2-color Zanfirico lecture will start out with a demonstration how to make a base paddle of white glass on a 1/8″ mandrel.  Once the paddle is made, a second layer of glass will be added to the paddle along with a substantial amount of clear glass to form a loaf shape.  The loaf will then be heated and twisted to make the final Zanfirico Cane.
The Twisted Rainbow Zanfirico will start out with the same base paddle using clear glass.  The instructor will then demonstrate how to apply commercial stringers of rainbow colors to the paddle.  The paddle will then be encased with a clear loaf, heated and twisted into a rainbow ribbon Zanfirico cane.
The next cane will use both opaque glass and transparent glass to form the paddle.  The paddle will be encased with clear and twisted into a more complex cane.
The final cane will used hand-pulled stringers of color and clear on a base of clear glass to form latticino threads.  Those threads will be encased with clear, heated, and twisted for for the final Latticino Zanfirico Cane.
A short congratulatory wrap up will conclude the class.
