Why discipline doesn’t matter when using habits?
“You need a lot of discipline in order to get what you really want in life”. This sentence is totally wrong.
Of course you need discipline and willpower in order to do any action, but whenever you want to reach a long term goal, your Frontal Lobe, the part of the brain, where discipline and your conscious mind house, is not in charge.
Let’s say, you want to go to the gym. The first couple of times you will have to use a lot of discipline and willpower in order to go to the gym consciously. This decisions are done by our conscious mind, the “I” in us, that is called Frontal Lobe and that is in control of every action that is new to us and needs to be thought through (like going to a place where you have never been before). Humans and mammals in general have another part inside of their brain, that is called “Basal Ganglia”. This part of the brain is totally seperated from our conscious mind and can automate repeated actions – like going to the gym and doing sports. Once we have created such an automatism, we don’t need any discipline anymore at all! Well that’s not entirely true, after a year of doing that habit, you will still have one day a month, where you need a smaller amount of discipline. But just like with brushing our teeth, even this one day a month will be a lot easier than when you go to the gym the first couple of times. That means, you have a lot of willpower left over for other important things, once you have manifested your habit.
Discipline and willpower are like a muscle – it gets drained over the day
Why do we need this Bassal Ganglia anyway? Our brain is too small and energy consuming to be 100% “manually piloted” every hour of the day. Habits are a lot more effective in terms of energy and way way faster than if you had to re-compute every decision over and over again. When you want to tidy up you know exactly where all your things have to go. But once you try to tidy up your girlfriend’s clothes you will feel how difficult those simple decisions like placing ones clothes in a wardrobe actually are.
You can automate things that cost you discipline so that they become easy
Everything on earth that a healthy human can do – no matter how exceptional it looks – is just an automated and very well trained habit – and you can train that too. Programming, Being rich or famous, doing stunts, being sporty.. You name it. You will need a lot of discipline in the first 30 days and then over the next couple of months it will become easier and easier and you more and more successful.
Whenever you do something “only this one time” a new habit is formed
There are no exceptions in habits – once you are “weak” and eat a cookie “just this time after workout” you will do it in this certain situation over and over again. To be more precise, you have to do something MORE THAN ONCE, in order to establish a habit. But twice is already enough and usually you forgot about the first time anyway, so be careful about what you do “just once”.
Habits are stored in the Basal Ganglia – forever – but you can override them
Habits cannot be deleted. The only way to get rid of bad habits is to replace them. Alter your habit slightly so that you are still in the same environment (the kitchen) and the same time (after lunch) but instead of eating a cookie you don’t have any cookies at home. you only have bananas or nuts at home.
