Class Description:
This class is based on the premise that plot is created when a character’s inner beliefs clash with his outer world. A series of videos and worksheets will teach writers a new way of thinking by guiding them through exploring the mentalities of their characters. By asking specific and targeted questions about the belief systems that compose the characters’ inner worlds, writers can understand what drives the choices that they make. In unit two, we will explore the people, circumstances, and physical elements of their outer environment. This class will teach you to refine your character’s goals by exploring his purpose. It will guide you in choosing elements to spotlight in his physical environment to help you hone your description skills. Its focus is on developing insight into how your character views his world and makes choices to create a compelling, character-driven plot with enough depth to carry you to the end of your draft or your revision.

This course is ideal for writers who are revising a first draft and looking to develop a more realistic character, as well as finding subplots to add layers and depth. It will work for writers who are working on their first draft who have a good idea of a plot but are struggling with a flat or generic character.

Class Project: Each video is followed up with a worksheet that will ask specific and targeted questions about your character. By filling out this worksheet, you will be training yourself to ask these types of questions as you write your scene, which will help you gain insight and inspiration as you write. Use this worksheet as a springboard to begin your writing sessions and see how you can apply the ideas you gain to your manuscript. Students are encouraged to share any insight they have gained with the class.

Book Creator
My name is Lindsey Renee Backen.

I’ve been scratching out stories for as long as I can remember. When I was thirteen, I typed a seventy-page novel, bound it in a red folder, asked my mother for the correct spelling, and labeled it Lindsey’s Manuscript. Since that time, I have improved my spelling skills and written thousands of pages. I have also penned and produced 6 plays.

I create books. Since 2015, I have published my own novels under my imprint, Ever Ink Press, and have worked helping other writers prepare their manuscripts for publication. Since becoming a published novelist in 2011, I have continually added to my author’s toolbox by developing skills in writing and editing novels, book layout, graphic design, filming and editing footage, and creating websites. I was acting out stories even before I studied musical theater in college, but my training in developing characters for the stage has helped me deconstruct and teach the process of creating complex characters on the page.

I love talking to people who write and began teaching classes to help them gain confidence in their own abilities and avoid the mistakes I made as they venture into the publishing world. Everything I know about publishing, I have learned through real-life victories and failures. I do what I do, because I love telling stories and watching writers like you transfer their own tales from their heads and hearts onto the page. I believe storytelling is one way we understand our lives, define our outlooks, and empathize with one another. We all have a story to tell, and no one can tell it in the unique way that we can. You didn’t choose the story in your heart. It chose you. You’re the only one who can properly tell it.
