I’ve lived outside the U.S. over half my adult life, exploring the globe and figuring out how to live and work abroad.

I ran a marathon in Seoul and climbed the Great Wall of China. I did a juice cleanse on the beaches of Thailand and got caught in the rain next to ancient pyramids in Mexico. I learned how to teach and became a student again and most importantly, realized connection is the key to our existence. The more we can all get outside our comfort zones and engage with other cultures and communities, the more we all expand our idea of what it means to be human. And the more of us doing that? The better off we’ll all be.

In all my years of travel, I noticed I kept getting the same question over and over again: HOW ARE YOU DOING THIS? And they weren’t asking how I was doing it emotionally (although I’m sure that was part of it) but rather they were asking PRACTICALLY – how did I manage to keep bouncing from country to country, living and working abroad?

These questions only grew after I started a YouTube channel during our most recent move to Mexico. I began spending hours each week responding to comments and DMs, connecting people with all the resources I used in our move.

After a couple of months, I noticed a shift in our comment section; we were attracting both new travelers and experienced expats, who began jumping in and helping out, oftentimes before I could get to my computer to answer whatever question was asked. Relationships started sprouting and we even heard of meet-ups happening off-line, friendships borne out of shared experiences.

This sense of community was so powerful I started wondering if I could use it to help more people; if I could put all the resources, knowledge and mistakes I had learned from in one place while cultivating a community of like-minded travelers, knowing together we could go so much farther than any one of us ever could on our own.

This is how Connected Expats began, and I can’t wait to see where it goes.
