This course will cover details on when the Alberta Tourism Levy applies, how to register, how to collect the levy from guests and how to analyze your numbers from Airbnb and other channels to file your return. On time filing is important as there are significant penalties and interest charged for non compliance. Here is the course outline:
Part 1:
Introduction to the Alberta Tourism Levy – what are the rules, the exceptions and how does the overall program work
Implications of not reporting – many people are unaware that this is required as it was announced with less than a week notice and has been in place since April 1, 2021. People who have short term rentals that do not comply can face significant penalties and interest.
Part 2:
Registration and Deadlines – this will go through the details of how to register your properties in TRACS: the Government of Alberta system for doing your Alberta Tourism Levy Return.
Setting up the tax in Airbnb – this will cover the steps in Airbnb for setting up taxes.
Part 3:
Getting tax information from Airbnb – the reporting is a bit tricky to find so we will cover how to find your information.
Analyzing the data in Excel from Airbnb and from multiple platforms – we will cover some Excel sorting and functions for getting our numbers together.
Filing your return – we will go through a specific example of tax filing with screen shots so you can apply to your own properties.
